Video Sensing Tech Demo/Presentation (DWD/PPM Final Project)
For today's presentation, I did some research on some of the available social applications for cell phones that attempt to contexualize cell phone content and allow you to share it with others and publish it immediately online. My research is also directly related to a project I am currently working on for DWD/PPM that invloves creating a java application for your cell phone that automatically uploads content and creating a website that stores the content and allows you to create video forums to discuss and view topics of interest. The forums will also be available through rss.
I plan to relate this to this class by attempting to expand the java application to automatically record video when the phone senses sound over a certain threshold. My research:
Most of the sites/applications I found were using already existing online places like flickr. Some of the applications allow you to bipass the need to mms content by uploading directly to a prespecified location. I found that there seems to be a lot more happening with pictures as opposed to video content.
This site attempts to associate meaning with the pictures you take on your phone and then makes them available on flickr. In order to use it you have to download a flickr authorization token and the actual application. It is only available currently for Nokia Series 60 phones. On their website they say:
Merkitys–Meaning can add the following contextual information:
* Locational information
o GPS (with additional Bluetooth GPS device)
o GSM Cell info
o Country
o City
* The bluetooth environment
* Calendar events
* User defined tags
* User defined description
Thus allowing you to find photos with simlar tags or information.
Zonetag also requires a Nokia Series 60 phone. Once dowloaded it allows you to upload your photos to flickr with zonetags, specifying tags for the photo and privacy settings.
This site allows you to share photo and video content also based on an existing web service. The application supports buzznet, flickr, textamerica and webshots. By downloading the shozu application to your phone you can tag videos and photos that you upload and have the content automatically emailed to an email address you previously selected on the website. You can also have recent comment activity transfered to your phone. The site also allows you to add contacts
By subscribing to this site, you can have 5 second to three minute original content submitted by users or popular content (i.e. videos, animations, documentaries etc.) sent to your phone. You can also submit your own content. Basically you subscribe to a particular "TV" channel and you can watch as many blips as you like associated with that particular channel. It appears as though this is a creation of Sprint and only available on Sprint/Nextel phones.
This site is a close example to what I am hoping to create except it doesn't appear to support video
Once registered for this site you can create "hubs" where you can share text message and picture content with friends and contacts. If you make your hub public it is available as an rss feed that people can subscribe to. You can view the site on your computer or mobile phone. Once you register and login the site is set up like any other
"profile site". It displays your friends, hubs you've created or subscribed to and content that you've uploaded to the site.
Dynamic Web Development/Producing Participatory Media Final Project Ideas:
For the video forums, I am considering the use of flash as a mthod to tag or comment of frames of video based on the timecode.
Here is an unfinished flash example created by Alex
Comments
Really interested in your ideas for your final project. I would definitely use it the site once its up. Think about that film idea I was talking to you about today.
